Bad Moon Rising
Creedence Clearwater RevivalAbout Purple Slice
I'd been detailing cars and motorcycles for years. I had great customers, picky customers some with antique cars worth thousands of dollars. It is said that all products are made from the mother of necessity and invention and basically that is how Purple Slice was developed. I needed a good product!
There was only one of me and I couldn't find a product that I could use directly in the sun without streaks and haze. Especially something that worked on windows as well as paint, chrome, leather or vinyl. Maybe a product that I could use that I wouldn't have to worry about spending time cleaning the cracks and crevices after waxing.
I wanted to be able to assist more customers during my work week. I needed something that would cut my time in half and that I could use on many different surfaces without the worry of over spray.
I started developing Purple Slice 10 years ago. At that time, it had no name. All I know is my wife’s favorite color is purple.
Batch after batch I mixed in my (her) kitchen sink in hopes that it would be “just right” this time. I tweaked and tweaked as the months went by. My biggest challenge was keeping my secret formula consistent.
I started attending shows where many of my customers “showed” their antique cars. People started to notice the incredible depth of shine and asked what they were using on their cars. They would point to me and say “Ask Jerry”.
Amazingly people in my own industry wanted my product. So I started to share my product to help them and occasionally sell some to them. Word of mouth carried my product fast with the detailer’s world.
As time went by, more and more people were asking me where they could get it. Before I decided to go into mass production and spend my life savings, I wanted to do a marketing test and see just how many people would actually buy my product. So, on the seat of our pants, a few friends and I took off to Laughlin, Nevada for the big River Run 2005.
Since it was a last minute decision we had an impossible time finding a hotel. We finally found a place for $112.00 a night with No air conditioning and filled with cockroaches.
We looked into getting a booth at the River Run. With no avail we were sent away by the seat of our pants because we didn’t have a license to sell (which by the way takes two weeks). Feeling doomed we were told that if we were to go to the Arizona side we could probably find a place to sell our wares about 9 miles down the road.
We found this great little bar where we went in and asked if we were to do mini-wipe downs on their client’s bikes we would pay for their first cold beer while they wait. They agreed and we set up shop in front.
We started to do bikes and the guys were raving about how wonderful their bikes looked. The owner asked if we would come back on Friday morning. The next day we did 20 bikes in the morning. We even discovered that it worked on HOT pipes!
Before the morning was over, the Sheriff showed up and shut us down because we were still within city limits.
The bar owner told us about a bar down the street that a friend owns called Topless Tacos and was outside the city limits. So off we go to àTopless Tacos.
This whole experience made me really feel for Colonel Sander’s and the many trials and tribulations he went through.
As the day went on people kept coming into the bar and saying, “He should market that product!” People then wanted to purchase some.
A man asked me what the name of the product was. Since I hadn't named it I glanced down to the bottle in my hand and I said “Purple”. Slices your time in half! Thus, Purple Slice got its name.
When once home from Laughlin, I realized that there was such a great market for the product. Bob Massey, a buddy of mine from the Marine Corp, which I hooked up with after 20 some years, designed the first Purple Slice label.
We labeled our first run of product and took it to the Veterans Stadium Swap meet and sold 75 bottles our first time out.
I still didn't take it serious.
Then on to the motorcycle shop, East Coast Choppers. The guys in the detail department loved the product. They said, “You're going to make it big with this.” “But, you must change your label.”
One of my customers owned a printing company. He designed the label to what it is today. Because I love the beach and my HOGG, they went into the label and my friend had the most awesome corvette that was also used.
I went into Laidlaw Harley, to get parts for my bike. They commented that my bike always looked so new and clean. I had no intention to sell to them but to pick up a part. Before I knew it, they purchased their first case of Purple Slice and said they would give it a try. Two years later and approximately 70 bottles a month, many Purple Slice customers buy from Laid Laws Harley Dealership on a regular basis.
Week by week, Purple Slice has made it into stores throughout California including Merritt’s Ace Hardware. Starting out with only a few bottles now is sold in hundreds of stores in California, Texas, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Oregon and Washington.
Purple Slice is becoming a “house hold” name in the motorcycle and car industry. Creeping up behind, Purple Slice is now being used on boats, RV’s, planes, furniture, computers, televisions, appliance, eye care, restaurants and hotels.
As the Purple Slice vision grows we realize each day from our customers that you don’t have to purchase 50 different products to do the job that one product can do.
Jerry says, “We challenge users to find something that they can’t use Purple Slice on. And if they like it great! If they don’t, then tell twenty people! Those who just invest in one single bottle and use it on everything they can realize in a very short period of time that it takes the place of many products that they currently use.
Although Purple Slice has over 1000 uses, we get requests for other types of products using Jerry’s technology. He has several products in the works that will certainly tackle the job with ease of use and long lasting results. Without having to use more than a simple mist or dab, you can assure the one bottle will last you a long time.
We asked Jerry where he sees the Purple Slice Company in 5 and 10 years from now and he answered “Didn’t think about it to begin with, but I know it will be big. We are going to make it easier for people to care for their personal items without the time and money spent for many products. Could you imagine actually being able to clean your car without ever using water?”
